Toile de los Muertos

Every scene on this mat was hand inked in house, drawn one at a time the way a traditional toile would be. Calavera mariachis playing under strings of papel picado, and an ofrenda lit with candles. Look for the Catrina herself, dressed for the occasion and dancing with her partner. Butterflies drift between them.

A marigold border wraps the whole scene, the flower that's said to guide the way home, and a cut-paper papel picado edge finishes it.

It's a companion piece to Miss Catrina. The soft bone-colored ground and warm grey ink pick up the purple tortoise tile backs, so the whole table reads as one collection.
